The story of Ocarina The ocarina is one of the oldest wind instruments in history: some Chinese specimens date back to about 12,000 years ago. The ocarina has been a particularly important instrument for Mesoamerican cultures since at least 2500 B.C. and both the Maya and Aztecs produced various versions of clay ocarinas, often depicting sacred animals and used in rituals or religious celebrations. The sound of the ocarine is characteristic and the instrument is not free of defects: it is difficult to find the correct intonation by intervening on the diameter of the holes and the width of the resonance cavity, and it guarantees a great deal of flexibility in modulating the intensity of the sounds produced.
